„Climate-friendly"
Annex I No. 4a UCPD as amended by EU 2024/825 (EmpCo)
What does it mean?
The term "climate-friendly" is a generic environmental claim that from 27 September 2026 is prohibited by the EmpCo Directive (EU 2024/825) and Annex I No. 4a UCPD if it is not substantiated by specific, measurable data. Consumers today expect transparent and comprehensible justification for such statements. A mere claim without a comparative basis is misleading and constitutes an infringement of UWG § 5. To advertise in a legally compliant manner, it is necessary to specify the savings compared to a defined reference value (e.g. EU average 2022) and to disclose the calculation methodology (e.g. GLEC Framework) and the verification (e.g. ISO 14064-1).
